Sociology

of Women

Women in prison is a societal problem because it goes against traditional gender roles and norms that suggest women are gentle, loving, and caring and shows that they can also be like their male counterparts and engage in dangerous and criminal activity that can land them in prison. It is sociologically important because it is just recently getting the attention it deserves; through studies, theories and statistics, of the consistent and abnormally high rising incarceration rates, the health issues and family impact that these incarcerated women bring to their families and friends. High incarceration rates are not justifiably reflective of crime rates and indicate that our current U.S incarceration practices reflect problems within sentencing policies in our criminal justice system.
